How-To

How to Hang Frames and Build a Beautiful Gallery Wall

Great framing can be undone by careless hanging. These simple rules help your frames hang straight, at the right height, and in arrangements that look professionally styled.

The golden rule: 57 inches to center

Hang single frames so the center of the artwork sits about 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor — standard eye level. Most people hang art too high; this rule fixes that instantly.

Hanging a single frame

  • Mark the center point on the wall at 57 inches.
  • Measure the gap between the hanging wire/hook and the top of the frame, then offset your nail accordingly.
  • Use a level to keep it straight.

Planning a gallery wall

  • Lay it out on the floor first until you love the arrangement.
  • Keep a consistent gap — about 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) between frames.
  • Trace each frame on paper and tape it to the wall to preview before hammering.
  • Anchor the layout around one central or largest piece.

Choose the right hardware

Match the hanger to the frame's weight and your wall type. Use proper wall anchors for heavy frames on drywall, and picture-hanging strips for lightweight frames or rental walls.

Bottom line: Hang to 57 inches at center, keep even gaps, and always plan a gallery wall on the floor (or on paper) first. A little measuring beats a wall full of nail holes.
